NAMI Santa Clara County, a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), has been providing essential support, education, and advocacy to individuals and families affected by mental illness since its inception in 1975. As one of the largest Bay Area NAMI affiliates, its mission is clear: to assist those with mental illness and their families by reducing stigma, promoting research, and collaborating with mental health professionals to improve the quality of care. This nonprofit organization, rooted in community service, actively works to change the conversation around mental health in the region.

At its core, NAMI Santa Clara County offers a wide array of programs designed to support individuals living with mental health conditions and their families. These programs range from support groups and peer-to-peer classes to specialized educational courses for mental health providers. The organization also reaches out to diverse communities by offering materials and support in multiple languages, including Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean, to ensure that mental health services are accessible to all. By working closely with public organizations, private businesses, and the media, NAMI Santa Clara County continues to advocate for increased funding for mental health research and better services for individuals living with mental illnesses.

The history of NAMI Santa Clara County is a testament to the power of grassroots advocacy. What began as a small gathering of 12 parents in 1975 has evolved into a key player in the national movement to educate the public about mental illness and advocate for the rights of those affected. Over the years, the organization has spearheaded many initiatives that have contributed to changing the way mental illness is viewed and treated in society. The dedication of volunteers and leaders has driven the creation of life-changing programs like Peer PALS and Ending the Silence, which have since become models for affiliates across the country.

NAMI Santa Clara County’s contributions have been recognized through numerous awards and honors, highlighting the impactful work done by its staff and volunteers. From local government accolades to national recognition, these awards are a reflection of the organization’s relentless pursuit of breaking down barriers to mental health care. Today, NAMI Santa Clara County remains committed to empowering individuals and families through education, reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness, and fostering a supportive community for all those affected.
