Dear Mother Emanuel AME Church,
We, as members of New Creation Lutheran Church in San Jose, CA, are horrified at the actions that took place at your church on the night of June 17, 2015, during a Bible Study. We also applaud you in your ability to forgive Dylann Roof, the perpetrator of these acts. Our hearts go out to you and the nine families of the victims, all of which had a life that was cut too short.
We want to stand with you in a pursuit of justice for Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, Clementa C. Pinckney, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel Simmons, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, and Myra Thompson. We have organized as a church to discuss these actions and to figure out what must be done. We stand with you and for you, to put and keep this young man behind bars, and to keep guns out of the hands of others with similar intentions. We are a small Lutheran church with large ambitions to make things right. Although nothing we can say will ever ease your grief or bring these nine amazing, God-fearing people back, we hope to hold out a hand of support and comfort.
We plan to not just discuss negative actions in our own church building, but also to get out on the streets and make a difference, first in our communities, then in the world.
